A DPS helicopter, a DPS Cessna Caravan, and a Houston police chopper orbiting over downtown Houston tonight.

In other news, the Customs and Border Patrol, who, you know, are tasked with patrolling the border, have been f lying an MQ-9 Predator drone over Minne apolis.

I’m not too bothered by this. Passive observation of the protests seems fine. It doesn’t seem like CBP should be involved, but in theory it makes sense to be fluid with resource allocation. Certainly we’ve seen much more offensive police conduct.

I’m not terribly concerned about the Houston surveillance. It’s more of a passing interest to note the flight track. The CBP thing, however, is a bit more troubling. I fear that it has become somewhat of a rogue agency under Trump.

I for one want to see an increase in police overreach. Let’s see how far we can take it.

Too bad they couldn’t pick an American-made plane...

This is as old as the internet, but it’s always been a favorite.

You should be, give it a few years and the  drones will be armed

A collapsing empire directing its aggression inwards. A few years down the line those Predators will have missiles, mark my words

Panavia Tornado.

There is one in America, at the National Museum of the United States   Air Force in Dayton, Ohio. She was donated to the museum by the RAF in 2002.

I hope so too. I think the timing is particularly bad, with the lockdown and covid and all that. Doesn’t help to have the president stirring shit too. It’s going to be an interesting few days, to be sure.

It’s been a rather fascinating, albeit disturbing, experience to compare those who are concerned about the pandemic with those who are not. There is a large swath of this country who use their constitutional freedoms to excuse behavior that puts others at risk. The only karma that I can find is that somebody who attended that huge pool party in Missouri has tested positive for covid-19.

They are likely collecting video. With all of the facial recognition techniques, I wouldn’t be surprised if they are trying to identify people. They’ve also been testing persistent surveillance. Spot someone doing a crime, then roll the rapes back to see what car they came from, then get an ID even if they couldn’t get a face.

Armed drones: not okay! But I think we can draw the line there instead of declaring everything a slippery  slope.

It is a little ominous. Though CBP I think is less compromised than ICE.

I remember a time long ago when movies showed police jets as a good idea. Dragnet came out 4 years before the Rodney King beating. I’m not sure the producers would have wanted the same ending scenes after then 1992 riots in LA.

The problem with this type of surveillance is that any vehicle in the area can be tracked backward in time. Once that’s possible, it can be used to track innocent people if the person interested has the funds. I don’t think I’m being clear, so I’m going to share something to help you understand what shapes my perspective.

My dad was a bad guy. Tracking down my mom after their divorce was one of his specialties. He found her one morning, forced her off the road and stole “his” car at gunpoint. We were living in a different state at the time. He managed to find us several times over the years and each time he did, we moved.

Once you’re being tracked, the data can be misused, even by the police. One poor fellow found himself a suspect in a burglary just because he rode his bike around the same loop repeatedly. He had tracking enabled and the police asked for a blanket record of every person who had been in the area. He had to spend time and money defending himself just because the police knew he was nearby. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.nbcnews.com/news/amp/ncna1151761

Sure, they say that the data is low resolution and the systems are secure, but we all know how frequently secure systems are compromised. It’s just a ticking time bomb.

It’s better not to collect that kind of data in the first place.
